APRIL FOOLS DAY 2004

The best day of the year! April Fools Day is the chance for you to play childish pranks on people in the name of fun. We bring you the low-down on what McCarthy Industries has done this year to amuse people of Burgess Hill!

We had a number of ideas this year, with two big ones which are explained fully further down. However, here is some of the smaller stuff we did around Oakmeeds:

A visitor to the school would end up confused in the event of a fire, as the fire exit sign was moved onto a classroom door

Small pictures of Mr Wilmore with a halo kept popping up everywhere, not least in Mr Goacher and Mr Demetrious  rooms

The clock in Mr Demetrious room was re-set so it ran 5 hours fast. He didn't notice until just before break! After the way Mr Vincent drives the minibus, it was thought best to place an L Plate on the back of it
Small, Mr Wilmore style postit notes kept popping up on the strangest of places, even in library books with messages such as "Good Luck in your retirement and Happy Ramadan" And all the plug sockets in the library were covered up with "Do not use, Danger of Explosion" signs

We also started a rumor it was Mrs Bonner's birthday, and this was met by an embarrassed Mr Goacher wishing her happy birthday, and constant well wishes from students all across the school

However, the night before Scott McCarthy and Chris Traylen of McCarthy Industries and Peter Chapman of Burgess Hill Uncovered went on a trip to prepare a few April Fools Day jokes. And here they are:

The Legendary Peter Chapman and Mr Scott McCarthy celebrate the successful planting

The teachers are always saying students should care, look after and help to improve the Oakmeeds environment. With that in mind, our first plan was to plant a small palm tree like plant on the Oakmeeds field. Having started out with a pen knife which soon snapped, we were stuck. There was no way we could get the plant in the ground. But fear not, a quick phone call and Mr Peter Chapman had arrived in the Chap Mobile, complete with digging equipment. An expert gardener, Chapman had soon softened the ground with the trowel, and dug a small hole with the spade. We then placed the plant into the ground, and left it looking rather fine. We sped away in the Chap Mobile at well over the speed limit and with no lights on, as Chapman only realised when another motorist flashed him, as we headed for our next target

The Statue covered in Bog Roll The statue covered in bog roll
The evening finished with a trip to St Johns Park. The famous 'Statue of Stability' was the target, and using specially crested Burgess Hill Uncovered toilet roll we mummified it. The original plan was to dress it up using unwanted clothing, although seeing as none of us had unwanted clothing, this plan was scrapped. Using Elliot Gwynne's famous climbing technique, Scott McCarthy was able to scale the statue and wrap it around the head, and the majority of the roll was used. Teamwork was the key, as each person took a side to wrap it around. Despite numerous tears having to be tied back together, the plan was a success. There were a few people hanging around the park, and we were worried they might tear down this fine part of expressive art. However, they didn't, and it was still standing the following morning, although some had fallen due to over night dew
