"They
scored 7, we scored 4" was how Scott
McCarthy summed up this disappointing evening at
the Hamsters Cage, as Mac Industries slipped to
their first defeat of the season at the hands of
Sam Franks Barca Babes. "I suppose the
drink and burger king beforehand didn't
help" was how Doug Lane summed up the game,
but on the evening there was no doubting who the
better team was.
McCarthy's
hand was forced into a number of changes. Peter
Chapman was back in the side for the first time
since his disagreement with Scott McCarthy,
while Kieran Elliott was unavailable, meaning
that Peter Morgan was recalled to the side. Tom
Walmsley played between the sticks, which saw
McCarthy partner Morgan in defence, while
captain Robert Jones played alongside Bert Lloyd
in midfield. Dan Collin was back in attack to
partner the returning Chapman
The
game started badly, as the Hamsters gave away
three early goals - enough was enough, and
McCarthy put himself back between the sticks
after some glaring errors from Walmsley - one
including kicking the ball straight to a Babes
player to allow him to score
Peter
Chapman got the Hamsters back on track that
highlighted just what he brings to the Hamsters
side. Dan
Collin had the ball on the left, Chapman made a
run though the center to collect Collins pass
that had split the defence, the keeper came
rushing out, but Chapman showed a glimour of the
pace that used to be his trademark, as he was
quick to toe-end the ball with his right foot
into the bottom right corner from all of 20
yards
Chapman
also wishes to highlight his own goal, which
provided a fine moment in a dull evening.
Thinking he was helping in working back, Chapman
did superbly to get near the ball as it was in
the area. Unfortunately, instead of clearing it,
all he managed to do was help it over the line,
a moment which will no doubt long be remembered
in Hamsters history with such great moments as
Robert Jones falling in the net, Bert Lloyd
crashing into the fencing in the warm up, Robert
Jones being knocked over by the on-rushing
McCarthy, and Robert Jones sliding in and
missing from two yards.
Tom
Walmsley, now revelling in his midfield role
grabbed the Hamsters second, although no-one
seems to remember how it was scored. However, we
are sure it was a splendid goal, despite his
ankle problem
With
Mac Industries needing inspiration, it was down
to Dan Collin to again provide it, as he notched
the other two goals for the home side. His
was a goal of sheer class. Somehow Collin
managed to scissor kick it all of 50 yards and
it evaded everyone as it crashed in off the
underside of the bar (Actually, we can't
remember how it was scored, so Dan provided this
'alternative')
Collins
second goal was memorable though, in the fact
that it was remembered. Dropping deep, he took
the ball short from Scott McCarthy, and set off
on a mazy run. Having got to the halfway line,
Collin cleverly cut back inside and completely
wrong footed a number of defenders. He then got
the ball out wide to strike partner Peter
Chapman, who promptly returned it before Collin
was on hand to smash the loose ball into the
corner of the goal.
Unfortunately,
the opposition ended up scoring 3 more goals
than Mac Industries, and it was back to the
drawing board for the Hamsters after their first
disappointing defeat of the season
