Sussex v Australia - Day One 01/07/09

With the 2009 Ashes upon us, Australia decided the best way to warm up before this epic test of cricketing ability would be with a game against Sussex. Combining the chance to drink all day in a County Championship-esque environment, see some of the best players in the world perform and in turn abuse them for being convicts was too much of an opportunity to miss for the Barmy Army, as headed to Hove for day one of the Aussies 2009 Ashes defence

Bert begins the day by attempting to take a bite out of Jonesys neck Then nations media were out in force for the big game
McCarthy soaks up the sunshine - minus sun cream, as per normal Sussex go through a vigorous warm up, that at one point had James Kirtley shouting "oh no" during a particularly vigorous groin stretch
The Aussies begin their warm up Lloyd has gone for the unusual tactic of a packet of beer jerky
Michael Yardy is interviewed following the messy toss Ricky Ponting faces the Sky cameras
Jones was attempting to score, and unsuprisingly found himself two runs down after only two overs Lloyd and Jones enjoy the sunshine
McCarthy was on the traditional cricketing drink of Westons We soon made ourselves at home by chucking rubbish everywhere
It was a beautiful day for cricket Carl Hopkinson was back in the field to offer encouragement to his Sussex team mates
The first Aussie wicket goes down, and that brings Ricky Ponting to the crease Hello Ricky
Goodbye Ricky - for eight Despite having work in the evening, Wright was on the beer
Potters train pass was soon acquired after he lost his wallet Two Westons down, 4 to go. Mixed nicely in with a further four pints of Old English
McCarthy places some delightful brie onto a biscuit The traditional rubbish bag was in place to ensure we were environmentally friendly
The traditional luncheon interval game of cricket on the outfield gets underway A wicket keeper and three slips seemed a bit extreme, especially as it left just McCarthy and Potter in the field
90 for 2 at lunch represented a poor start by convict standards McCarthy enjoys a sausage roll
This is a Seagull Jones was, remarkably, still managing to score. He soon gave up though
Another Aussie wicket falls Off to steal some items from the changing areas no doubt
Wright seems to be enjoying seeing the Aussies struggle Lloyd laps up the continued sunshine
The tea time game begins, as Potter takes his position at bat Oli Rayner sends in a delivery
Brett Lee takes strike Sussex continue to make life difficult for their visitors
The Aussies head over to the hospitality tents at the end of a tough day one They were more than happy to sing autographs though, which was nice
Ricky even decided to have the honour of a photo with McCarthy These two chaps had been part of an Aussie group who had spent most of the last innings abusing McCarthy and his green shoes. We were able to share a beer afterwards though
A fine sunset marks the end of day one at Hove
